Retirement day for Mrs Slattery

16th Dec 2025

Today, our school community came together twice to celebrate and reflect on Monica’s remarkable career as an SNA in St John the Baptist BNS. It was a day dedicated to recognising the lasting impact Monica has had on our school and, most importantly, on the lives of our boys.

At midday, we gathered for a special school assembly where the children presented Monica with a beautiful card, organised by Ms O’Farrell. Several boys shared heartfelt messages on the big screen, and our 5th class performed a song and an acrostic poem in her honour. It was a truly meaningful celebration of Monica’s dedication and care over the years.

Throughout her career, Monica supported countless boys in mainstream classrooms and, more recently, embraced new challenges in our ASD classroom, Seomra na Rí. As always, she approached this role with the same commitment, kindness, and professionalism that defined her work. Monica also trained as a Roots of Empathy instructor and took great joy in delivering the programme to our third classes, helping children to develop understanding, compassion, and emotional awareness—skills that will stay with them long after they leave our school.

In the evening, Monica’s family joined us for a second celebration. The event was filled with lovely speeches, thoughtful presentations, and a beautiful rendition of Monica’s favourite song, Fields of Gold, making it a memorable and emotional occasion for all present.

Monica has always embraced every aspect of life in St John the Baptist BNS. Whether it meant dressing up, climbing into a go-kart, or simply going the extra mile for the boys, nothing was ever too much trouble. We sincerely thank you, Monica, for your dedication, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the boys of our school. You will be greatly missed, but your impact will be felt for many years to come.
