Children’s Book Festival with Gerard Siggins

On the 11thof October the boys of fourth class got the opportunity to meet the author Gerard Siggins in Cashel library as part of this year’s Children’s Book Festival. Gerard spoke to St John the Baptist fourth class boys about why he started writing, how he was inspired to write the Rugby Spirit series as well as answering many interesting questions. Here is a recount written by Kevin Pastusiak about his trip to the library with his classmates.

Meeting Gerard Siggins

By Kevin Pastusiak, 4thClass

Today my classmates and I went to the local library to meet Gerard Siggins. He explained about the history of Landsdowne Road and then he told us about clay-pigeon shooting. After that he told us about a man who died on the rugby field because the man on the other team went on top of him in a scrum and broke his neck. Following on from that, rugby rules changed and got replaced. Then Gerard told us about his son ‘Billy’ and that before it was bedtime Gerard had to make up stories to help his son sleep. One of these stories was called ‘Rugby Spirit’.

Gerard told us that ‘Rugby Spirit’ was the first book that he wrote. It is about a boy called ‘Billy’, like his son, who was a rookie to rugby but got better over time. The reason he got better was because ghosts were giving him tips on how to get better.

Gerard seems to be a great writer and very passionate about what he does. I really enjoyed listening to Gerard’s life story because he is pursuing his passion.
